About Snow Shoe

Snow Shoe, located in northwestern Centre County, has a total area of 0.6 square miles and a population of about 800 people. Mountainous Snow Shoe's unique atmosphere reflects its history as a local industrial center. In 1859, the Bellefonte and Snow Shoe Railroad entering Snow Shoe led to rapid growth of the area. Hotels, coal mines, and other businesses were added in addition to new housing.

Also known as a summer resort, John Blair Linn has been quoted to say "Snow Shoe has for many years been a popular summer resort, where mountain air and mountain scenery invite and charm hundreds of visitors yearly." It is conveniently located on Interstate 80 and the hillside downtown mixes historic homes with new development.
